Given our 15-year history importing wood flooring, Wood Flooring International (www.wflooring.com) is uniquely positioned to create this flooring exchange and provide pricing, delivery, and after-sales support.
For example, in the case of Brazilian Cherry when we started importing it in 1989, it accounted for only 0.2% of the USA flooring market. Now it comprises 8% of the market and has truly become a commodity.
During this time, we have worked extensively with many of the major supplying mills to introduce our in-line process quality control system. This system sets detailed technical standards for each product and is customized to the machinery specific to that mill. It requires training the line staff, creating an independent QC staff in each mill and controlling quality at each of the following points: stock preparation, lumber selection, kiln drying, molder, tennoner, grading and packaging.
We then monitor these systems through remote spot audits along with periodic mill visits to perform upgrades to the QC system. We also audit each incoming load. We also have a full time employee in Brazil to assist with the QC system, purchasing as well as logistics.
On the Wood Floor Exchange we have listed the products and costs from a selection of the major Brazilian Cherry mills, each of which uses our quality control system.
For Bamboo and Oak we employ the same systems but now include quality control systems for the finish lines, and lamination operations. Once again we have our own local staff on the ground in these source countries.
